Maybe some Blender Hair > poly stuff could be an option to his unshaved face (very short hair => lower polycount).

If blender Performance is an Issue using your zbrush head,
just try to cut the are on the mesh of the head out, where you are doing your hairy work on.
This should save performance in the Blender Viewport a lot!

If Indigo ploycount is an issue, try use instancing for left/right hair on face/eyebrows

The real bottleneck as far as memory goes is the export from Blender to Indigo. I rarely get memory limitations in Indigo (and if I do, I just use the 64 bit version), and I've never had problems in Blender apart from slight slow-downs, which are easily corrected as you suggest. But I've often had exporting headaches when a scene reaches the million poly.
