Quick, catch the lamp before it falls over
sorry.....
Great looking image, everytime I start to think I'm getting some good renders, I see something like this and I'm nowhere near it. But that's ok, something to keep shooting for!

perhaps if you set the meshlight to the same settings as the sun it would help
or if Ono implements something like what the new version of Radium has so it can see the Sun better/faster etc

Thanks guys.
CRC: One thing I learnt by doing these is how much better a downsampled hi-res image looks compared to one rendered at the native resolution, especially in cases where noise is hard to completely eliminate. If you could see the first image at full-res, you'd think it's still quite noisy, but a lot of that disappears in the downsampling (it's about half the original size). I even suspect that in order to get the same quality, rendering big and downsampling is quicker than rendering at native res. If you've got the rendering power and memory, go for it.

yeah for noise that is good, mega super-sampling basicly
but not so good for SSS, refractions and complex caustics that require high sample count, you will be rendering forever!

I'm sure you're right. Which is why I try not to use SSS. But you can spot a few large caustics in the first scene, which looks quite patchy in the full-res render but a lot more compact once downsampled. By the way, I've adopted your MLT settings now. Will report on improvements.

As said before, a stunning simple scene! Lovely!
May I ask where you have that floor-texture from? Did you made it yourself? I am looking for a good floor texture for a scene I'm working on. Did you model the planks or is it a bumpmap?
Btw, the meshlight version looks great too, it looks as if there are very thin curtains over the windows, very nice effect. And a faster render of course!
I really love this scene, well done!

Cheers Roger,
I'd have given you the floor texture, but it's a commercial model I bought from Arroway (bump map only here, no geometry). If you've got 60 bucks, I'd warmly recommend you to invest in one of their DVDs. Not all wooden floors are great, but their concrete is just fantastic. By the way, these textures are 6,000 pix wide, so there's a lot of detail to play with and this also allows close-up renders.

Okay! Thanks pal, I'll certainly consider it. It's only 45 euro according to the website. Their site looks really promising and simple, with good samples and lovely rendered previews. Even the tips are handy and to the point.
Thanks for the pointer man!
Take care and sweet dreams (it's bedtime in the Netherlands).

couldn't bear the thought of paying 25 euro postage more than once
Now if only they would show up....

You're a long way from Arroway (ha, ha), so they might take a while. Mine showed up quite quickly. Then again, I'm practically on their doorstep.
