Rubik's Cube

Post by Labello » Wed Mar 05, 2008 4:56 am

Hey Com!

After a big pause i want to show something new. Not that spectacular, because is still have got to get familiar with blender.

So i modelled my momentarily greatest addiction. this wicked cube! i play around at school all the time and sometimes my fingers are hurting but i can't let it be. my personal record is 55 seconds.^^

The low resolution & jpg artifacts (?) of the bump Map are "bäh bäh".
otherwise solid modeled work, but your scene could be pimped much dude ;-)

Try to kick the boring 4/3 Format, also keeping your object in the center isn't very spectacular!

Maybe try a 16/10 format the cube on the left side in the "golden cut" (get contast to the Indigo logo on the right side). Some dof blur for such "small" objects can also be used, maybe a more dramatic camera angle, more from the ground, then from above could be interesting too...

I'm realy interested about your switching from C4D to Blender, any reason beside the good old "no-bling-bling" problematic?!

maybe a mix between a (different) exponent map + bump map would be nice too...

BTW: 55 seconds = O_o
I even never matched to solve this thing once ^^

Well the official world-record is 9.3 seconds :-)

I know that this work is not the best i could have done. but i am going to try your hints in another project. this is finished.

@blender:
well i not only switched the tools im working with but also the operating system. from windows to linux. and it is fucking sick! i love it. blender, inkscape, gimp and so on.

and after some hours of reading the wiki of blender and playing around i got it and am amazed about the concept and the speed u are able to work. its wicked! C4D isn't any option for me anymore!

Welcome to Blender! Although I have recently been using Maya and Mental Ray, I agree.... Blender is just awesome.

To everyone else: You have not seen any renders from me recently because I have just bought a new house and am trying to get it in order. More stuff to come - I promise!

Another cuber!! My PB is 26.30, but I average in the mid 30's. I've been cubing for a few years now, so don't worry, you'll get faster.

What method do you use? I use intuitive Fridrich F2L, and my own stupid LL method.

Nice render BTW. :D

Well i dont know how one could call my method.

i at first build the cross an then the corner of the first layer and the fitting edge of the second layer.

well... last layer... rotate edges, permutate corners, rotate corners, permutate edges.

well i have got the cube since chrismas :) so i still have got some time. a friend of mine uses the twistlewaith algorithm... this is really wicked stuff :-) but i am not really able to figure out how it works... most of the turn are 180° turns... so u dont need that many steps :)

That would be Fridrich F2L (cross, then corner/edge pairs). My last layer is, ATM, orient edges, orient corners, then permutation (if I don't know the PLL alg, I do corners, then edges).

I'm also trying to get better at my 4x4x4. Current PB is 3:07.19 (set earlier today... :P). I hated the thing until I finally gave in and learned how to do it completely.

I also made a website recently... :D

i will soon turn 18 and i am going to get some cubes from my classmates. this will be really gorgeous. your site is nice.

so u learned a sequence for every corner-orientation of LL? i'm to lazy to do that! but i think i wont be able to get around it to acieve real speed. but i think your first two layers are still a bit slow when i watch your clip! :-P

For corner orientation, I use the Sune move (and it's inverses/reflections, etc. you can find how/when to use it on any cube site): (R U) (R' U) (R U2 R')
What do you use then? you don't orient the corners one-by-one, do you?

For the F2L: yeah, I'm still pretty bad at looking ahead... that's a big thing I need to work on.

In your render it looks like the corner of the rotated row of the cube is intersecting the floor there. Then again maybe you just have a funny shaped hole in the boards right under the cube.

You know, I had noticed the same thing the first time I saw this, but looking at it now, I can kinda see by the shadows/reflections that it's actually not. I just think the camera angle throws off any ability to see the angle that the rest of the cube is at.
