Why the different glass color ?

Because your 2-sided glass forms a volume itself, it's only a few mm thick and therefore not tinted blue that strong.
Your 1-sided glass opposed to that is a big hemisphere and therefore a lot thicker, therefore absorbing a lot more red and green light, therefore it looks more blue

Very nice SzLaszlo, I like the inset render more.
What was the material used for the textured body version ? If you didn't already I would try to use textures as specular reflectivity for a phong.

Hi
the textured body material > phong (ior2.51 ,exp85 ) and brushed aluminium with mixmap ( like spec.~ bump map )
