XBOX - Looking for tips to improve

Post by Coen Naninck » Sat Jun 04, 2011 5:03 am

Hello all,

Here is the first generation XBOX from Microsoft that I modeled a few years ago in SketchUp and now rendered in Indigo 2.6.1 trial version.

I like the image, but I'd like you professionals to look at it and give comments for improvements. Or maybe you like it just the way it is.

I would improve the environment to be either more realistic (maybe a shelf with a few games and TV and cables and stuff) or more simple and clean. Right now the corner and the edge to the white nothingness are a bit distracting. And the lighting could be IMO a bit more directed, so that there would be more pronounced shadows.

There are good examples of both simple and clean "studio" renderings and more realistic and fuller scenes in the gallery. For example Godzillas speakers (http://www.indigorenderer.com/sites/def ... review.jpg) have nice, clean, simple setting and beautiful warm-cold contrast in lighting.

The model itself and materials are good, although the green thing on top (and the hole it's in) could use some more smoothing.

Hi Silmä,

Thank you, those are excellent tips!

I've modeled a lot of electronic equipment myself, including the speaker set I have attached below. I also have an XBOX controller. I'll go back and improve the scene, then post back here.

I agree that the environment could use a little tweaking. I like to use an EXR environment map for interior scenes when I can. There is a free one on this page: http://gl.ict.usc.edu/Data/HighResProbes/ in the Ennis-Brown house that I enjoy using.
