competition - i got the lego bug...

Post by dougal2 » Wed Jan 10, 2007 10:23 am

rest assured though i won't be entering the competition.. somehow doesn't seem original enough ;)

quick yafray test:

indigo, after quite a bit of faffing about (60 mins render, 70k mu/s):

it's not right yet (chome parts are inconsistant), but when i've finished the model, i'll spend time in blender tidying up all the meshes and do a nice indigo render.

i'm about half way done building this model - over 750 parts in total!

Uhoh! i think i got everyone on this lego train!
Looking good so far. is it just a car or like an offroading car? (i'm guessing it's a car right haha)
Any new renders?

yeah you're on the right lines there... a big offroad truck thing. no new renders yet - having actually worked out how to render, i'm going to save that until the model is finished.

it's slow going though - lego seems to take 10x as long to assemble on the PC than in real life :(
I can only do a couple of pages of instructions in one go before my brain melts a bit, and this model has about 38 pages!

i might just get it done before the end of the week, before i go on holiday.

Hah, i know what you mean. The pirate ship i did had 36 pages, and 950 some pieces.. took me about 15 hours to assemble at least.

Stylish! 8)

I started modelling a lego set a month ago or so..
Haven't done much on it though, but I will finish it :)
it got 36 pages of instructions...

But the biggest one got 300++ pages :P

Anyway, great piece!

ok, I will then, if I remember to.

i've finished the vehicle modelling:

Image

but i'm having big problems getting it exported to indigo - none of the materials are coming out :(
the blender exporter is basically saying "warning: faces without materials" on every single mesh... even though the materials are assigned and work with blender internal and yafray??! *very confusing*

Image

EDIT: i've fixed the materials problems. i did the lego stuff in MLCAD (i prefer it to LeoCAD, after a few tests), and the LDRAW importer for blender is somewhat clunky and broken.
Opening in LeoCAD, and exporting a 3DS has solved all my problems!

Let's see what overnight rendering brings :)

an overnight indigo render:

Image

there are some transparent parts which were supposed to be chrome/reflective. but i feel this is a good start.

C&C please, i'll pick it up when i get back from holiday.

do you use plain colors or textures? if you haven't already you could think
about using single-color textures (you know, reverse-gamma-correction issue  )

Nah, I think whats bugging you manitwo is the plain color for the environment, makes some parts looking unshaded ;) Maybe the postprod is a bit violent too, but I like your choice of a model Dougal2.

well.. i tried to render with a nice HDRI map:

Image

but this has taken 5 CPUdays to converge so far, and the balance is all wrong - not enough model lighting and the background it getting bleached out. I've heavily post pro'd this image, cutting the truck out and then treating the sky and grass separately to try and balance the picture. but still no detail on the tyres as before :(

i'm going to bite the bullet and cancel this render.

any ideas on how to improve things?
