Perhaps you'll don't need to buy a new rig for this Project, at least the Ram Problem in Indigo could be work around by using Instancing in the next Indigo Version!
It seems Ono successfully implemented this feature to the next Release, take a look HERE.
You could simply cut your ship in the middle, and mirror the Instance to save 50% of your polygons :wink:

I'm no Blender User (a C4D dude), but I know that there are optimized build of Blender for a lot of CPU extensions HERE.
Perhapes such a Build could speed up your viewport :)
