most ordinary bolts have lettering on the top i think. i agree with the bump being too strong.
looking very good though!

Okay, I turned the bump way down. (From .007 to .003) I've been gone most of today and it had last night to render, so this one went a full 24 hours. For the steel, perhaps I could try a blend material from both Cr and Al.nk? BTW, the surface the whole thing is setting in will also be brushed steel.

Indeed, beautyfull render. I'm not sure you can blend nk files...

You can blend nk phongs, it's just that the properties may not match the actually alloy properties.

Ah, muche better :)
Maybe you could still lower a little bit the bump map value. The scratches should be very subtile for a brushed metal effect.

Well, steel isn't really an alloy of chrome and aluminum anyway, but the look is somewhat in between.

I'll try to fix that, right now the bump is just a flat projection.

New 2 hour render. The steel is 55% Aluminum and 45% Chrome. The brass on the center gear is 60% copper and 40% gold.

[Edit] How would this be for animation quality and size? It's 50 spp and took about 20 minutes to render.

looks great :D

- size: ok
- quality: should be rendered longer ;)

I like that brass material, but I guess, you should use less copper :)

the steel also looks quite good :D

I forgot one important material to use with blending, btw:
al
cr
ag <- that one, I forgot^^
pt

:)

blends with void make things darker and darker ;) - great for dark materials as well as all the transparent ones ;) every transparent material as nk looks black(ish).

Also interesting are blends with different exponent :)

@ coolcolj: you could also try to experiment with blends of them, to get alien materials :D

Okay, this render went ~40 minutes and is 100 spp. I don't want to render the frames any longer than that, as I'm hoping to make it at least 800 frames... Quality ok?

[Edit] I'll make one gear steel, but I need ideas for materials to put on the other gears!

Rendering a test of those mat suggestions right now. I tried copper on the large gear at first and it looked good, but I decided not to put it on that one because it would be so impractical. Since copper is such a soft metal, and considering the design of the spokes on that gear, I thought it looked like the gear would bend itself out of shape in no time flat...
