Great exactly what I want!!!

Your water is a plane and bidir is on, isn't it? You use a .exr? Why these caustics were not visible on your previous renders?

it's a water mesh with volume. Bidirectional MLT, MNCR 50,000. Sky+Sun

they have always been visible, only when you can directly see them like you can when your underwater :)
http://www.indigorenderer.com/joomla/fo ... er_192.jpg

but when the caustics are refracted like they are when your above the water surface then they won't show that easily :cry:

if you use a mesh light you may get better results. Small test showed some things. EXR, I haven't tried

time to ease my mind from all the water stuff, so I decided to go work on my humanoid model a bit . I gave him a robe, first time attempting to model some clothing. Needs work but it's been a learning experience that's for sure! :o

Robe needs to be looser from a functional perspective :P
Makes him look like a monk...I sorta have him as some kind of Jedi Bounty hunter sci fi dude 8)

textures courtesy of you know who :wink:
Hard to figure out what settings to use with the textures.

I have a few other variations of this rendering right now as well. Perhaps I will combine him into the Alien Artifacts scene I have in mind, once I get the water sorted

I gotta finish off my CGSphere Alien sphere entry as well :?

Now with Dual layer Dermis/Epidermis SSS glossy transparent skin!
and some inpox.nk boots :P

rendered up to 2200 samples in v0.9 test 7 - it needs another 800 samples at least till it's fully finished and converged as the skin is still not full even and converged to the right colour, still too light. Damn it takes a while, I didn't see the skin colour properly until around 1500 samples :shock:
Interesting I had use a white balance of D75, unlike that usual D65 for Sunlight, that's why the above render is bluish with D65. Probably because of the low contrast and overcast type light, burn had to moved way down!

All I did was copy the mesh and extrude it inwards 25mm for the inner skin layer, or 0.25cm for me before scaling it by 0.01 on export to Indigo.
The skin looks quite light here, with the Sun towards the backside, but with the Sun shining directly from the front the skin renders really dark, will post this other render soon.
I did use settings for a more tanned type skin. Exponent probably needs top be higher, 25 here.

dark shaded areas are probably smoothing shading errors...I think...

still not bad for no textures at all! 8)
Interesting how the lips go pinkier automaticly from just light scattering!
Right now he is nothing more than a sculpture, he does need some eyes, so the sculptured eyes I have in there makes it look like he has his eyes shut with the SSS skin. Pretty cool in way :)

Will rerender in test 8 to see if it's much better

quick test with V0.9 test 8. Man the glossy transparent is much better, and this SSS skin renders much quicker in terms of convergence and the dark shaded areas are gone

And only up to 200+ samples here! :o
Looks more realistic too

I used 2 layers of Glossy transparent here with Exponent 20 each. Although Ono says the inner one should be specular

still too light when the sun hits it from this angle, need to crank up the settings

ahh I figured out why the skin is too light, I had the inside layer switched with the outter layer! :?

OK finally an African skin really looks black and renders much faster as well :D

African skin!

rendered up to 350 samples, using the settings suggested by Ono. Specular material inner layer, glossy transparent skin with exponent of 14

Probably needs more samples for further scattering etc
will resume rendering at a later time

settings used for this render...didn't turn out as dark as I had hoped judging from the pdf pics
maybe my skin layer is too thick.....

rendered to 1400 samples, still not even and fully converged yet.
I think most skin will need to be rendered up to at least 3000 samples, much like milk due to the high scattering levels

some noise seems to have reflected onto the wall - from the specular material maybe? :)

I like how you can sense the blood under the surface in some areas of the thigh for example

Code: Select all

    <medium>
        <name>MedSkin</name>
        <precedence>10</precedence>
        <epidermis>
            <melanin_fraction>0.02</melanin_fraction>
            <melanin_type_blend>0.5</melanin_type_blend>
        </epidermis>
    </medium>
    <material>
        <name>Skin</name>
        <glossy_transparent>
            <internal_medium_name>MedSkin</internal_medium_name>
            <exponent>14</exponent>
        </glossy_transparent>
    </material>

    <medium>
        <name>MedHumanoid</name>
        <precedence>15</precedence>
        <dermis>
            <hemoglobin_fraction>0.03</hemoglobin_fraction>
        </dermis>
    </medium>
    <material>
        <name>Humanoid</name>
        <specular>
<transparent>true</transparent>
          <internal_medium_name>MedHumanoid</internal_medium_name>
        </specular>
    </material>

yeah my skin is way too thick
had it at 2.5mm rather than 0.25mmm - Whoops

now with the correct sized skin, wow that really slows the render down!! :shock:

another issue I noticed - Cindigo scales the ray nudge distance downwards with the same scene scaling of 0.01 I used

this effectively made the ray nudge distance become zero in Indigo, and another reason why the skin wasn't rendering properly.

Once I removed the ray nudge distance scaled entry in the scene file and reset it back to default, something kicked in because the render went like 3 times slower! ie the inner layer which has high scattering levels is finally getting rendered

hmmmm I don't know anymore

it would seem ray nudge distance needs to be set at smallest size you can go. It certainly renders differently, the redness shows when ray nudge distance is decreased to 0.0001

Well the skin layer is very thin...

time to put Indigo v0.9 test 8 to a hard workout :)

lots of scattering, refraction and reflection going on here, can anyone say long render time :shock:

all default settings, but with ray nudge distance at the lowest level of 0.000001 and it's good to see the Sun showing in the mirror reflection already at 100 samples....ie indirectly seen caustics... so will we see water caustics this quickly as well? ;)
even with MNCR 1000. I found MNCR 30000 slowed things a lot!
And didn't converge the whole scene quite as evenly.
There is an exit portal as well

I used the 3 SSS skin 2 layer settings from that PDF for Caucasian, Asian and African. Higher exponent of 50 though for the outer glossy transparent as these are not exactly humans, but statues :)
Adds a nicer oily sheen, but I'm also trying an exponent of 28 as well, double the 14 recommended by Ono to see what I like. Specular inner layer as Ono's suggestions.

The Asian and African look like the PDF's images, Asian one will get lighter and more orangey later on, but the Caucasian still doesn't have the pink tone I've been wanting to get. Haven't had much luck getting that red tone to the skin :(

I removed the exit portal from the scene and I think I found another Exit portal bug! :shock:

All those Fuzzy Sun rendered white things are a bug it seems....

bug as noted here

http://www.indigorenderer.com/joomla/fo ... php?t=2732

exit portal doesn't always speed things up after all :)
look how different it looks without the exit portal and in half the time!
