Wow.. this is looking stunning.
some crits:
* needs more DOF effect!!! :)
* needs more triangles on the top of the jug
* I might be wrong, but the original still life scene looks like it's on a wrinkled cloth or somesuch, would be cool to see that!

thanks Ono! :D Glad you like it. You're absolutely right about the crits. It's the next step to take. Thinking on how to model those wrinkles right now and adding the small set of spheres/circles on the top of the jug
EDITED: also the glass seems to be bigger/closer to the camera.

hehe.. you've got your work cut out for you.. have fun :)

Another strange thing I noticed: there seem to be some large indentations in the jug, judging from the still life painting.

hehehe, yup, 3 of them to be exact. Also taken them into account and I'm thinking of the best way to pull them in  The author told me it was a couple of times that the jug fell, but it seems to enrich its pictorical attractive :D It should be interesting to see how Indigo interprets them in terms of refelction.

Very neat!

Maybe a little smoothing at the mouth of the jar?

yup, still working on it  Though it might imply some major modeling tweaks.

Quick update:
-added a bit of DOF.
-added wrinkles to the floor plane making it look like cloth.
-added the bumps (dents) on the jug.
:D

1st shot will be updated as well.

I don't know if it's just me, but the rim of the glass looks like it is in it's own, rather strange, perspective. completely different to the painting. Your apples look a little too waxy. Great composition. Looking forward to seeing the end result.

yup, the artist said the same thing about the rim of the glass. :? :? But in this case I think it's the other way around; I think he left it out of the painting on purpose. You know digital perspective doesn't lie  If you analyze the painting, it's as if he were watching the glass orthogonally (only way to get those 2 rims to fit in a single line) and then the base of the glass's perspective is exaggerated. Same with the jug. So I guess that's the human part in art that CG can't mimmick.

about the apple material, what do you suggest? Lowering the specular level? I got it at 0.30 in blender. But I think apples do have some level of reflection, don't they?

0.3 is probably way too high.
Try 0.05

Regarding the odd perspective, I think if you imagine that the top of the glass is at eye level, or the central focal point of the camera, then the painting is correct. In order to achieve this with indigo, you'd have to render the image with the horizon, or eye level, at the top(ish) of the glass, and crop the extra areas of the image away to get the same framing as the painting.

As for the apple material, you should be able to take the specular level even lower and still get some reflection by raising the exponent slightly.

And regardless of the crits, it's still a great piece.

as an addition, you could try adding a touch of yellow/green to the specular colour before exporting for the apple material

Thanks Ono and Dave! you forgot one more that I just got from the author.... make the apple's hole smaller, it's too open, hehehehehe

working on final changes..... :D though I think I'll have to leave the glass rim as it is. :( This is wht would happen if I match my camera's horizon with the top of the glass (check left and perspective views):
http://afecelis.gdlib.net/Indigo/glassrim.jpg
so it would end up being framed completely different.

anyway, thanks for all the help you guys've provided. I really appreciate it. I've learned a ton on this couple of days

update: Nov.27/06
-lowered apple's material reflection
-closed the apple's stem circle

I think this is almost done. Waddayasay?

Yes.. i think it's almost done.
The actual objects in the scene are done I think.
The main problem with it, I think, is that the setting looks a little artificial, it's like a still life in a Cornell box or something :)
Perhaps you could use a low-intensity (gain) HDR probe as the background, just so you don't see the reflection of the black void.
Also perhaps some texture (wallpaper) or bump on the walls?
