GREAT modelling. But I can't believe there are no textures... looks definitely textured to me. Also I can't see any sss.

I would second requesting the wire. I would really see how this is modelled.

EDIT: guess I was to slow typing. :-)

I would add more sss to the material and give the colour a more saturated green.

mrCarnivore, yes i'll increase SSS a bit. i just hope too much SSS won't kill the effect.

radiance, i did a small post pro too, colours and gamma.
about the eyes, i forgot to say there's black spheres inside each eye, to help.
and there's another object inside head, that gives darker colour on the head.
there are darker areas that gives a textured effect, i think noise helps, and modelling too, when objects overlapping each other, that gives variations... wings is darker because it's modelled and it must overlapping the body.

i'm rendering the head with higher ior, it seems better, but still noisy.
i have another comp(1 P4 1.6GHz, and 1 Athlon 3000(i think)), so indigo renders quite fast ! so time to render is not a problem for me, it's time for setting that i need, that's why now i ask your advices on the forum.

thx.
Sorry for my english.

So I apologize for my doubts. As DaveC said, the fact that so many people doubt this is a render prooves how much this piece is oustanding !

That is an amazing render!! I also though it was a photo when I saw it but after seeing the wireframe I am just awestruck. Holy shit! :D

How long did it take to model that sucker??? Also what kind of lighting are you using?

Modeling masterpiece !

Perhaps the textured feeling comes from the reflection of the backgroung onto the mantis. Actually it has to be, since the grass is part of the scene and not composited.

would be great, if the environment was modelled too :D

Add some ants and.....

OMG, just go on!

here is a higher version, with more SSS, but i've added too much reflection, wings especially, i have to decrease exponent for glossy ref,
About the model, i modelled it with blender quite long ago(3 years i think), it took some hours (i forgot how many) but never take time for texturing! i used photos and real mantis that i have here on the garden ( i even found two "Empusa pennata" this year).
btw i think textures are broken with SSS on last test build.

environment could be modelled, but that would increase rendertime and RAM required for just a blurry thing :P

now i have to add mode details for Hires...

btw rendertime is 3 hours using 2 comp (1.6GHz and 3 GHz)

PS : thanks nick for this great program :D

no, SSStextures aren't broken, but not implented, yet ;)
great work again ;)
what kind of additions do you want to add? It looks already far too realistic to implent anything :D

hey kosmo,
dont you think ono knows this already?, also he said that he will
work on this. dont push people. it wont work.
(sorry but you didn't do this the first time).

@richie: new one is even better! the only thing which bothers me are the dark edges
on the sss-mat (which i think is this energy-loss problem nick talked about).
keep it up - im looking forward to your next render. :)
