This really is too great to put texture on it! Just model the rest too^^
Maybe, you can work with specular, at least partly, as it gives SSS without energy loss ...On the other hand, it may become too reflective, in that case...
Just try it out...

hi,
i tried to use an emitting plane instead of a sun with physical sky that i used in first tests. ok that's not really realistic, too much clean, the head especially, and i think i need more reflection, but i like the SSS effect.
Advices are welcome, thx

The head is the the only thing that really seems fake to me but the rest still looks good!
Have you tried lighting with an environment map?

The sss effect is visble nicely now! However, there are large areas of the mantis that now look really grey when they should look a more saturated green.

Yes, white balance is a bit reddish that's why.
Still amazing !
And sorry if I'm pushing someone about textured sss too (my own preference still goes to procedurals), but that was just to mention I had the "flash" about textured sss reading that thread. Ok, no one cares
Cheers

Yes I think sun version is better because now there aren't reflection on eyes and now it seems a little more flat.

I wish I could model organic things like that....
