A Kind of Late Afternoon

Modeled entirely in Blender, lots of Dupli-Verts to imitate Vue's ecosystems. The sunlight comes in through 3 windows, and you can see the sharp cutoff of the window's edge in the air scattering.

Wow that's crazy! There's some weird bright coloured spots in the bottom left corner, what's going on there?
Awesome concept :)

Awesomely weird! I'd love to see a cleaner render :)

The colored spots in the lower left corner show up when I use media -- when rendering without media (black sky), there are no spots.

Once Ono gets the media Scattering speedup in place, this should render faster and give a cleaner render. Ran this overnight on an i7 (8 threads), with subsurface scattering media...8 hours at 1680 x 1050.

The media is in a cylinder 350 by 70 Blender units long, and the light is reflected to the main cylinder through 3 mirrors reflecting a bright spot on an Open EXR map. Using bidirectional + Metropolis. Scattering isotropic, not Heyney Greenstein.

Any hints for how to speed up render?

Did you put exit portals in front of your mirrors ? I tend to believe you did, because the performance is not that bad already. Well placed EP would prevent most of the EXR light to bounce off the external structure.

Lovely scene, IIRC there was a similar project a few years ago but this one looks better.
