Cor-ten

Post by Pibuz » Mon Nov 10, 2008 12:59 am

Hi guys..
Sorry to bother you..
It's been a while since i've been starting trying to achieve a realistic cor-ten material, but it seems like i'm ridiculously bad at that.. :?
Somebody has some good textures and/or advices and/or ready materials so i can start messing around again? I'm in no hurry about that, that's only a sort of mania...
Thank you so much!

Given that image, i'd say a blend of two mats would do: rust and steel (quite matte of a steel tho), blended by a uniform noise map, where rust would cover 80% of the material at least.

the isl shader should not be too complicated too:

2 fbm's > remap colors to steppy fades (brown or gray, for rust or steel)
another hf noise func to mix'em. Theory rocks :)

i tried it with two textures blended with an shader, and added a little bumpmap, if you think it´s good enough i can upload it to the material DB.

I'm finding the red too saturated for rust, as it is it looks like a nice eroded paint on metal material.

Here are some more references, googling:

Also I emulated the first step I mentioned with Maya, before I get the references above tho. The following textures are just good as cheap rust, just a proof of concept of what I said. Not bad for bump, but saturated indeed.

Is there anything close to what you where looking for, Pibuz ? I never heard about CorTen before...

The second link (the first that doesn't need to be copied) doesn't work for me...

Uploaded it but for better realism combine it with a dirt map or something.

One can just use the two images I linked last in my previous post (rust_2kx).
