white render?

Post by Jenjen » Mon Jul 30, 2007 2:34 am

hi,
this is my second post. i've not used a render program before so please bare with me.
i've be creating a house that when the glass is in place and i take an interior view the render generated is entirely white.
without the glass the image renders as normal (albeit a little dark) , i don't know why its doing it.
I just want to be able to have transparent and reflective glass in the windows to make it more realistic, but it doesn't seem to want to work.
apologies if i'm being stupid and there's a really simple explanation!

the glass properties are set to specular and I have made the faces of the glass the correct way round (white side towards the viewer?) and made the opacity 0. what else do i do?

below is the image WITHOUT the glass.
thanks

Hi, I'm guessing you're only using single layered geometry for the windows?
Glass in Indigo needs two layers of triangles.

You need to model the glass as a solid object.
So you need two quads or whatever per sheet of glass.
Normals should point outwards.

1. Create a thin box that represents the window pane.
2. Make sure the faces are pointing outwards. Use monochrome mode to check direction of faces and reverse them by using the context menu. (View->Face Style->Monochrome)
3. Apply a 'glass' preset to the glass material. (Specular, IOR=1.52)
4. Adjust the SU opacity setting of the material to 0. (no absorption). If you want some color in your glass, keep increasing the opacity value until you are satisfied.

hope this helps...

yeah, brilliant that has helped, thankyou to both of you.
my only problem now is that the glass still doesn't seem to let a lot of light through, is there a way i can increase that, like change the IOR?

All you have to do is to change the tonemapping settings.

Talking about geometry that at times does not appear to want to render. . .such as a sphere, all that needs to be done is to reverse the face.
