CONTEST!!! design a material preview scene
Oh, it looks like I'm late, I wasn't near an internet connection in the past week... could you please post deadlines for such future contests in advance? Thanks!
Anyways, I'll post mine if that's not a problem:

It has round as well as flat surfaces, the left part is hollow, there are two thinner parts at the right. Plus its UV mapped properly.
Here's a totally diffuse material with a wood texture:

Radiance: your preview: the floor would be better off without the thousands of "Indigo renderer" texts. Maybe add a simple cylindrical base, as the object seems a bit "unstable", I'd expect it to roll over. And the grey band occupies a large part of the front of the material. Imho changing these would result in a very good preview!

"Have you ever had a render Neo you were so sure was real? What if you couldn't wake from that render? How would you know the difference between the rendered world, and the real world?"

So, is this it? is it the final file for us users to go ahead and make new materials to upload in the future to the material DB? or does it still need tweaking? or is there a newer version of it?radiance wrote:here's my blend file:

feel free to play with it and suggest any modifications.
the 0.61 exporter script is it in in the text editor
unpack and place all textures in your indigo dir offcourse.
the floor tiles is a 2x array modifier.
IMPORTANT:
in the exporter:
set resolution to 220x220 (or 440x440 and downsize in pshop)
set white balance to 'E' instead of 'D75'
set lens aperture to 0.01 to get the same slight DOF
Greetz,
radiance
Oh, I would like to participate on this one !
I think Maluminas points are relevant:
Actually I find your one by far the sexiest, Radiance (including in comparison with Maxwell's one), but technically speaking I'm not sure it complies totally with the requesties... please don't take me wrong, no offense here
And... I'm joining the competition
I hope I'll put smthing here within 1 week...
I think Maluminas points are relevant:
This has been discussed in CGTalk and illustrated with maestria.Maluminas wrote:-must have a curved surface
-must have a flat surface
-must have a sharp edge
-must have thin parts and thick parts (for SSS, double sides and absorption)
-must have a part where you can see a reflection of the material on itself
-Must have an easy XML to edit-in the mats (so the model should be .3ds so that you just have to set a path instead of having a bazillion vertex/triangle coord lines)
-the light setup has to be simple but effective
-as fast as possible to render
-must have a unique look for Indigo
-has to be sexy![]()

*casts resurrect topic!*
I've also tried to create a mat preview scene, that's what I've come up with so far...
Note that the one with the grid is the newer one
