I think rendering at normal resolution shouldn't give more noise then at double resolution but the other way around is not so sure without knowing more about the implementation details. (depends on the sampling strategies used) But either way I don't think you should bother as the difference is prob...

You could also try to render it with a diffuse material or other light conditions to see whether it is a normal or lighting (shadow) problem.
