Glass Problem

Post by Otk » Sat Nov 14, 2009 3:03 pm

Hi all,

Yesterday i changed my main program from SketchUp to 3ds max 2009. I dont know if it is a tradition or not, but my first render was a glass object :) I have 3 questions for you guys:

1-) Why do i see this annoying black points on my glass? i used Indigo Glass/SSS (Maxigo) with default values on glass...I tried to delete them with Neat Image but it was useless. How can i get rid of them ?

2-) And my second question is, how can i add water in this glass? I mean i saw some glass-water pictures and they were really amazing, how can i add water in this glass? Should i do it while drawing glass or what? (i am watching tutorials about 3ds max 2009, but i couldnt see it yet)

3-) And i really beg you guys, i searched everywhere but i couldnt find, how can u guys create water in Maxigo?! I saw in this forum that a guy is using specular but i couldnt find specular in Material Editor - Maxigo. Should i use Indigo Glass/SSS (Maxigo) menu or should i import source codes of water materials by IndigoImportMat menu...

I will be very gratefull if you answer my three questions

Thank you,

Regards

Check out Appendix A, page 112 in the latest version, of the Indigo technical reference.pdf which is in your Indigo installation folder. That explains how to model a glass with liquid inside.

Black may be because some normals are backwards.

Hi Otk !

Yes, you should use the Glass material for water (and for other liquids too). Just change the IOR from glass to water. IOR for water is 1.333.

Here's the schema of how you should model liquids inside glass for Indigo (taken from Indigo Technical manual).

Code: Select all

Modelling Requirements:
a) need sufficient polygonisation of the curve here because sharp edges cause shading normal
artifacts. For example 10-20 points may be needed on piecewise curve.
b) distance should be > 0.2mm
c) distance should be > 0.2mm.
Note that while the distance between the glass and water surfaces in the walls of the glass needs
only to be greater than 0.2mm, it should probably be about 1mm, depending on the width of the
glass
d) distance between glass and ground plane should be in range [0.2mm, 1mm]
e) meniscus should be modelled
Addtionally:
f) all geometric (given by tri winding order) and smoothed normals should be as labelled.
g) total number of triangles is expected to be in range 10000-150000
h) surfaces should be two-manifold and closed (not self-intersecting).
i) liquid and glass should be assigned different materials.
j) part of the surface of the liquid component should lie inside the glass as shown.
k) The model should be created in units of meters.
l) The glass medium precedence should be greater than that of the liquid medium (because glass
displaces water), which in turn should be greater than 1.

What rendering method are you using? You could try to use MLT instead of PT. MLT behaves better with caustics than PT.

[edit]
And pelase reduce your image file size.

I changed the method but i think its still the same...When i click to Aperture Diffraction these black-white dots are getting shiny

Edit: i changed the width of glass and water, i think its better now but as you see there are some white dots still... Maybe its because of my drawing, strange...I will draw other objects, if it will be the same again, i ll go crazy :)

@Otk

Did you by any chance set supersampling to 1? If so set it to 2. If it is already at 2 then
try to set it to 3 or even 4, just to give it a try. ;o))

Please zip and attach your 3dsmax scene to a post. I'd like to have a look at it. ;o))

@psor

As you see, your solution solved my problem flawlessly. It was 2 by default, i changed it to 4 and made a render and then there was only a white point, then i changed it to 6 and its perfect now : )

Thank you very much !!!
