I need to get this:

Onto a sphere, but I am having trouble getting the unwrap to work correctly...

Any special way to do it?

<-- no blender user but wouldn't spherical mapping do the job?

Go into topview (NUM1) and use the "Sphere from view" unwrap mode.

If your going to be doing renders of earth I recomend checking out NASAs blue marble website.

They have some -incredibly- detailed textures of earth. They can be hard to find and I can't remember exactly where they are on the site but they are there.

for the purpose of this post incredibly detailed means 21,000 by 10,000 pixels.

They also have varius smaller sizes as well for those that don't want to use 170MB images as a texture.

And they have this as daylight maps for all 12 months of the year, a night map, a cloud map, a specularity map, and a bump map. They also have under the ocean bump maps but I'm not sure how usefull those would be for most renders.

If you have trouble finding them I can see if I can figure out where on the site they where and link to them for you. And as a word of warning, the large ones will kill blender when you load them. I know from experience...
