For rendering them diretcly, I dont know how you could do.

Until Ono implements application of shader functions to SSS parameters or blending specular materials with null materials, forget about it.

Not only that SATtva, if you dig deeper in the forum you will find amazing tests from Ono based on points cloud data. Poorly as much 3d apps don't export volumes to points clouds it's not released, though the reason might be something else.

It would be great if Indigo was converting mesh volumes to point clouds (max density/falloff exponent/distance to surface for max density :D)

Yeah, I seen them (generated from perlin noise, AFAIR), just don't have a link at hand.

but is it possible to achieve mist-like effect? i think i saw one...that was somenthing with a big cube of mist enclosing entire scene? what was the matt settings?

Yes, with specular SSS material you can produce isotropic fog, mist, dusty air and alike.
