Yafaray - Indigo

Greetings,

a little comparison.

Yafaray:
Image

Indigo:
Image

The original scene and Yafray render is from lakcaj.
I tried to mimic all the original materials, apart from the floor which could have used a little higher exponent it's looking alright I think. The lighting of the original scene was accomplished bei two large area lights on the ceiling and on the wall in the back off-camera, small area lights in the shelve. I removed those area lights (duh) and just used mesh emitters where the spots on the ceiling and in the shelve were. The TV screen texture has a 10 gain, to give it a little fake-emission, the two boxes are uv textured cubes, so I couldn't do anything about them ;). It's Reinhardt tonemapping with a Post of 2.

Both images rendered for ~4 hours. I had a little noise removal done, thus the floor texture on the latter picture is a little washed out. The ceiling lamps look weirdly pixelated, any ideas about that?

edit ps:
yes, it's yafaray (thanks chronoh), the actively maintained rewrite of the yafray core

are you sure the top one is yafray and the botom one is indigo and not the other way around? although the bottom one looks more photorealistic, the top one seems to have more of that exponent floor texture and is also showing a little more noise (which i attribute to indigo rather than yafray)
however if it is the right way indigo has realy gotten way cleaner than yafray and deffinitly looks better

Trust me, the above is Yafaray, the other one is Indigo. :)

edit: The bottom floor lacks exponent, hence is a little too glossy. I was too lazy to correct that. ;)

then wow

While I do agree about indigo being superior quality-wise, you should not forget that the yafray renderer probably didn't need quiet as much time as indigo to achieve its result. So I'd say neither is better, it just depends on the what you use it for.

Well, I agree in general, but this particular scene rendered exactly the same time both with Yafray and Indigo. :)
Animation, walkthroughs and what not are of course still Yafray domain, but other than that.. especially interiors are owned by Indigo right now.

really interesting,

thanks a lot for this comparison, and also for giving some parameters you used with indigo.
(I never used Yafray but I find this result really good)

I just find the shadow a little strange in your version.

Thanks again, regards

Phil

Not quite, it's a new build of Lynx. :)

@Phil
Well, since it's the unbiased approach I'm not sure what to say about the shadows. They may be weird, but I guess if you'd build such a room with the same lamp setup, the shadows would probably look like that, I don't know.

It's a little tricky and involves recompiling Blender. Read more about it here.
