Restricting SUN light to specific area's???

I have an interior scene, and my main objects are on a table in the room.
Above the table in the room the ceiling has skylights.
I want the sky sunlight to shine in through the skylights only (Skylight as in hole in the ceiling), illuminating the table, but currently I cannot manage to get this to work. All that happens is the entire scene is illuminated.
I have seen renders on here which have the sunlight shining in through windows awhich is almost exactly the same as i want to obtain except through a skylight instead.
Can anybody please make any suggestions as to how to achieve this?

It's hard to tell without seeing any image, but I would say exit portals are what you're looking for.

Nice image. I don't see any skylight though. But a nice window, yes.

Thanks.
You cant see the skylight in the scene since it is above the table at ceiling level out of camera shot.
The only effects should be sunlight coming through it.
If you imagine the ceiling as a plane above the room, in the centre is 6 small square holes, which I hope will allow the light to shine through onto the table.
I hope that makes sense.
If not i'll attach a screen shot showing the wireframe for it.

It does make sense, but it will only make a difference if you've got no sun coming at of your window at the back. If that's what you intend to do, just seal your ceiling opening with a plane (or six small planes in this case), normals pointing towards the room, and give them a "portal" material. From now on the sun will only shine through these openings (which, incidentally, will considerably speed up your render.)

Ok so it is more like the effect I am after but still not quite.
The sun appears very yellow though.
The reflections on the table are bright yellow, and adjusting the turbidity only lightens the whole image.
Any suggestions?

Not sure. Usually the sun is very yellow when close to the horizon. You could also save an .igi image and try different white balance settings in Violet for a colder result.

Thanks I'll look into that.
