Looks like L-systems.
One thing about L-systems, is that I don't think you can actually do a realistic tree with them, because you don't get smooth transitions between branches.
I think some kind of volumetric (voxel) approach, maybe with marching cubes would work for that.

i've done both approaches, and voxels actually suck more than L-systems because of the recursive splitting / resolution problem (also, it's not like using voxels magically gives you smooth blending, it's still difficult to do well ;)).

Well, it may be difficult to do smooth transitions, but at least it's possible. And hey, it's the technique nature uses! (if you consider cells as voxels :) )

Looks pretty neat, but it looks like you need to know how to code, and coding is greek to me. I wish more programs would use nodes to represent complex coding.. Terragen 2 is a good example of this.

Nice hstokholm !

Well, one could build curves from L-system I suppose, the point being then to have a curve-based pipe primitive (with radius mapped along U or something more procedural).

I'm burning with that request (curve -> pipe primitive) for a moment in fact, should I add it to the list Ono ?
