It's finally come time for me to upgrade my P4 3ghz machine!!
Smoking! The i7 920 2.66ghz is quite cheap, but you need an expensive motehrboard and 3 modules of DDR3 memory. Still it makes a Q6600 look sad and slow

At Intel's Developer Forum (IDF) in San Francisco, they are currently showing off the computational power of the soon to be released Core i7 processors. Using the Cinebench R10 benchmark, which tests a processor's ability to render an image using multi-threading, the 3.2GHz Bloomfield on display blitzed trounced the benchmark by an insane margin.
Utilising four cores and eight threads, the CPU made short work of the benchmark in just 19 seconds and scoring more than 45,800 CB points.
By contrast, Core 2 Extreme QX9770 3.2GHz can only get around 12,000 points, overclocked to 4.0 GHz only barely more than 15,000 points, less than one-third of Nehalem 3.2GHz.

Have a look at the Cinebench figures down the page vs the Q6600
And that Q6600 is way overclocked over the 2.4ghz stock speed!!
And only 4 threads, the i7 can do 8 threads on 4 cores

with Maxwell Render benchmarks
5.1 min down to 3.6min with hyperthreading turned on is amazing!
Almost 2x faster than a QX9560

Well..how much faster the Q6600 was compared to your P4 ? And you still didn't upgrade?

Ok, joking..yeah, the i7 seams like a nice beast to have.

Q6600 was faster, but just not fast enough and elegant enough for my desires

Yup, the i7 is awesome.
Some Indigo tests done indicate the Core i7 is 2x or more faster than a Core 2 Quad at a similar clockspeed.

No wonder, Moore told us

I guess most of us here knew that would happen...

It's good to see you here CoolColJ, even if that's for short moments by now

does this mean ono has this shiny new toy?
Debating wether or not i'm going to make the upgrade, hav a q6600 at the moment.
I do not belive its necisary to get the tri channel ddr modules for i7, just recomended though i am not sure.
anyone have the word on this one?

tests show 3x2g (6g) DDr3 ram config is faster than 3x1g (3g) on i7
but I read that intel has a dual channel consumer version of the i7 for early next year. Might be slower though

an i7 seems to be about 35% faster clock for clock for 3d CAD stuff which is mostly single core + some dual at times.
just upgraded to a E8500 overclocked to 3.8 ghz for CAD but now thinking of overhauling the old box with a quad for a render machine - perhaps even i7 based if its as fast as ono says for indigo.
something o/c and running at about the equivalent of 2x 5gz E8500 + 4 extra threads would definitely be cool but too expensive to contemplate ATM at least for me.
of course then it would be nice to have CAD on it but that would be a lot of threads doing nothing most of the time...
...so...ono, buddy, what are you doing with your old Q6600?

It wasn't me who tested Indigo on an i7, sorry Big Fan

..probably a well thrashed CPU by now anyway even if only one careful lady owner and fully garaged...
and I know about Wellington rust...

Damn, seems like I have to move from AMD Athlon XP to Intel Core i7. I was just looking for a fast AMD Phenom.
I was working with AMD since my Intel 386DX40 ...
Best regards,
Martin
