yet another 3Dtexture approach

they use 2D textures to get for example non-uniform translucency 3D-textures
The combined texture needs quite some time to be computed.
It would be very interesting, if Indigo could use the resulting data (you don't need to calculate it more than once).
Wouldn't be a good idea, to directly implent the whole converting part, though: 10-90 min processing...
For Maya users ( only...

), there is a plug-in, too

There's a Maya learning edition that you can download and use for free, although the renders are watermarked and limited in resolution.

edit: their plugin doesn't work with my version of Maya

and won't load commercial plugins (talking about PLE)
Edit: The plugin works for up to 8.5, anyway it is only to load definitions, the generator is external and unreleased yet... I have subscribed to be warned on time. And yes, great found Kram !
Edit Bis: Erf, just realized there was a viewer and .vol files to download... Let's see...

wow looks really interesting! dig the middle image, looks like it could make for some very interesting forms.
great find

yep, I couldn't get a solid geometry out of it but nevertheless I did a volumetric test on a sphere and without lighting (colour as ambient):

For me
glew32.dll was needed to start the viewer...
This aproach seems interesting! a Sigraph 2007 paper... saw the video a while ago (verz interesting!)
The provided testting textures are ultra low res but all 6MB big, how big would be a texture from BbB become converted to this format

So the results arent as sharp as I would like to see them...
But neverless, the main asskicking feature of this Format is the kind of 3D volumen Microdisplacement stuff like in the middle image (watch the video for more of these!)
I think Ono could think about this if he someday starts mdp integration... the results and possibilities talk for them self!

yeah, I also found it via siggraph encore

It was one of the vids, mentioned in the introducing vid!
So, as I already was impressed by that small view, I watched the whole thing.
It's free to watch 'till 31th October, so, you should look at as many vids, as you can, 'till then^^

This is a dream come true!!! Since I was a kid I wanted to apply textures this way so it somehow copies and wraps around the object in a 3d controlled kind of way. Installing Maya right now
