Workstation question - serious.

Hello guys.

I'm now changing my workstation.
I have a budget of 4000 GBP Nett.

Can you help me with chosing good solution? I know most of you are superior in 3d stuff
It or parts has to be bought in UK.
I work usually in 3ds and blender
render in indigo and vray
3d scan in photoscan (much ram needed)

I was thinking of one of magnetars from http://www.armari.co.uk/

What can you advise :)

Warm regards
M.

I would suggest to wait for the first release with new OpenCL renderer: http://www.indigorenderer.com/node/1950

Maybe an array of 8GB+ RAM GPUs would be here a good choice, but only time will tell!
How much RAM does such a scene from you with photoscan meshes take for you?

btw: I bought 3x4770k with 32GB each one year ago for 3000€ and am still very happy with it :)

Photoscan about 64gb. It's just approximations. I have only 16gb and cannot produce complex model from more than 30 photos.

Hi

How far away are we from the opencl gpu renderer? I am working now with octane but not happy with the quality , would love to jump into indigo wagon..

also, will there be any loss in capabilities/quality from indigo cpu to indigo pure gpu?

thanks in advance

The render quality will be the same if I've understood it correctly, but I'm not sure we'll have the BiDir and BiDir MLT render modes supported with GPU rendering.

can do with pathtracing alone, but does anyone know if it 'll have displacement?

OK.
I made the order.

Basically it will be:
2x xeon e5 2640 2.6ghz 8 core
128GB RAM DDR4 2133
6gb PNY titan Black

It should arrive in 15working days

If you/guys from glare want to test something on this just write me :).

Displacement will be supported, yes.

Displacement is a pre-processing step and does not change anything during the actual rendering (there are just more polygons). So I cannot speak on behalf of Glare, but I bet it will be available for GPU rendering, provided you have enough GPU RAM to store all the extra polygons created by displacement.

EDIT : Damn, I was too slow...

Nice! Hope you're aware that Indigo's GPU rendering might not be able to use more than 1.5 GB of memory on your 6 GB card. :(
