Black rectangles across my renders

Post by ewdennis » Tue Oct 22, 2013 3:04 am

Hi
I've been getting black rectangles across my renders blocking bits of them out, if anyone can help me it'll be much appreciated. I have attached the screen shots below

There's also a problem where slightly lighter rectangles are above it

that looks very odd!
From the past I know that there could be some issues if your scene scale is REALLY out of relation, so check you internal scene scale and the export scale modifier if your house doesn't get exported as big as a planet ^^

+1, probably a scene scale issue.

If you launch Indigo and render the scene, in the render settings it reports the scene size in metres. If you're seeing astronomically large or microscopically small numbers, you should model your scene with units of metres.

This also matters when using media (incl. glass, water) since the amount of light absorption depends on the distance travelled in the medium, and the parameters are all defined in terms of metres. So if a pane of glass is 2m thick, it can appear black instead of a dark green for example.

Yeah the scale was the problem, it turns out my building was something like 10,000m long. Thank you for your help.

Although in an ideal world we should be able to render 10 000 km long buildings without a hitch ;)

We've even seen earth renderings from space without any issue...

We could do that in a special-purpose build ("Indigo Extreme"? :P ), which I have wanted to do before too, for rendering planets, solar systems etc... and then zooming to the surface :)

Theoretically Indigo is capable of it, but in practice it would need a fair amount of engineering work for little tangible benefit :)

To be fair, Indigo could render that just fine if the near-field geometry is near to the world (0,0,0) origin :)

so if exporters were to shift the world origin at the camera, the issue would pretty much never happen ?

Errors in large scenes would be less perceptible, sure.
