oh and the very nifty Bolt plug-in.

Thinking about it - I don't think I did very much to make this image
Original rendered at 4000x4000 and took about 14 hours with a little PShop work.[/img]

K guys thanks for the input - duly noted. BTW I 'have' seen assorted bolts with that colour and texture. But it's always interesting to see what others think

Hey Doug...

Your rust texture seems way to uniform for my eye...
you could try some advanced texturing, here is an C4D based procedural tutorial for a rusted bolt.

You can try to adapt some of the ideas and maybe some workflow to get a nice fighting texture that can be baked and blended with some NK material...

Saturation is not only a matter of taste, using saturated colors is like using a pure white when a light gray would converge faster. Plus the fact that, despite your perception of the bolts you had, they where probably of a less saturated colour than your texture, take that for two cents :) Try it and you will see, Indigo response to colour is quite strong in my opinion.

Really nice image! I've certainly seen rusted iron/steel that has almost been as saturated as that. What bugs me is the sharpness of the rusted screws. If they are that oxidized the groves should be quite a bit rougher. A little hint of denting (beveling) could improve that.

That, and decreasing (as have been said) the uniformity of the rust could make this an even better rendering.

My point is: maybe you could say the same words if the texture was even less saturated. Because some saturation levels in textures or materials are just not real...

Ok I'm finished with that, and I like that image very much actually.
