These are great, but they don't look correctly tonemapped. You really need to tonemap these renders!

I see so many potentially great architectural renders that would look much better (not to mention correct) if they were appropriately tonemapped!

Thanks for the comment!
This is indeed one of the many things I simply don't really know about. I usually use the standard camera response functions, preferably the high contrast ones for the lamps.
Do you have an example? Which of the images is the most odd, and how to fix it? Is that something that can be done in post pro?

In this one the light seems very unnatural.

Also in the daytime version the vase is burning out very unnaturally .

I am not an Indigo user (I came here via BlenderNation...) but in my day job I use Softimage/Houdini/Redshift/Arnold for commercials. The way we work is that we use a lookup table (LUT) while working from the outset. The only way you can be sure of a correct result is by building and tweaking your shaders and lights while viewing through the LUT. You render out linear (as EXRs for example) and do you compositing while looking thought the LUT also. Only for final output is the LUT and the colorspace conversion actually applied to the image.

The key thing to take away here is that you would not be able to take one of your renders and just apply a LUT and expect it to look correct. You need to have been developing your shaders and lighting while viewing through the LUT.

Also, normally when working with the LUT we generally use, we clip our samples at around 8-10.

As I say, I am unfamiliar with Indigo but a quick search shows me that Indigo has some kind of physical camera options for tonemapping your images.
http://indigorenderer.com/documentation ... ne-mapping

Where this doesn't help you is if you need to do a lot of post processing in say Nuke where you have no way of applying the same tonemapping that Indigo gives. That said, if you were to apply an entirely different LUT at this stage you would still be a lot closer to a natural look.

Again, I have no idea if it's possible to use a LUT while working with Indigo, and which format is supported - LUTs come in many different flavours.

Understanding why we work in linear colorspace is essential knowledge that frankly everyone should take the time to learn.

This paper is very good reading if you want to understand why you need to be always working in linear colorspace:

Hope that helps!

Hi Fluckrat, that helps a lot, thanks for your info! Will definitely take a longer look into it.

Indeed we used the built in camera response functions for tonemapping, which were modified for the first pictures, to replicate the heavy red tint we found on our early photos. We then realized that the reason for that was a crappy camera
So one reason the tonemapping is bad is crap reference material. Another reason is me being an amateur without professional workflow in this regard. So again, your hints help a lot, thanks for taking the time!

No problem! Let me know if you have any questions and I can try to answer them.

I forgot to say, nice renders by the way!

Just to show some action here, these are simple product renders of presentations for beers, juices, etc. involving wood. It's more about the wood, so the bottles are not quite realistic. As a gimmick, the logo just shows up when the light is turned on.

Hello, nothing really new to show off here, but I dug up some old scenes and put in new lamps. The TUBE lamp itself was shown before, but we reworked the cooling system, so new mood pics were needed.
Greetz!
