2001 Space Station Lounge

I'm trying to recreate the lounge in the Russia/US Space Station from my the classic sci-fi movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. I've always loved the set design from this movie, and it was difficult to choose between this and the centrifuge from Discovery.
I plan on modeling the scene without the people, as people aren't my forte.
So far, I have the basic shape of the centrifugal hall, the TVs/windows (I'm not sure which. If someone could give their opinion, I'd be glad to hear it), and the one seat and two seat chairs.
The light setup I have now: The ceiling is emitting bright white light, with no other emitters. I expected the ceiling to be bright white in the render, and I can't really understand why it's not.

Nice scene, a little noisy & small but I like where this is going (or rather where I think this is going

)
As for you question I do believe they are tvs on the right (seeing as their seem to be controls underneath them) and that whole on the right looks more like a window.
(I'd also like to welcome you to the indigo forums

You're less than two weeks old and I don't remember welcoming you so I'm taking the time to do so now)

Thanks Borgleader. I agree, they probably are Tv's, so I've given them a dark reflective material.
I've populated the scene with more chairs, changed the material some, and built some of the Hilton desk.
(Sorry, still a bit noisy and small.)

Getting nicer

Your chairs might look better if they were a tad more red, and are you using any sort of texture? Might help also.

another update. Added a bunch of details, such as magazines and glasses. Had it render since yesterday.
Could someone explain why parts of my magazines turned black? that's not in the texture.

I have no idea about the magazines but the chair material isn't "true to the scene". In the film the chairs have a cloth like matte material (from what I can see), yours is glossy.

Yeah, I see what you mean. I had the material set to Phong with an exponent of 5, but even that gives noticeable specular highlights. I'l set it to diffuse for the next render.
Once again, if anyone has an answer to why the magazines are turning partly black, I'd love to hear it.

I think it could be because you set the angle for smoothing the meshes too high.

How do I change the angle for smoothing? Is that an option in the export process?
Oh yeah, thought I'd post the period specific TIME covers that I made for the scene.

Awesome update, it's coming along nicely.
Things that may help you:

(An extremely high detail tile-able fabric texture for your chairs)
And a higher-quality reference I found:

Thanks, Godzilla, I think that'l help a lot.
Did a test render with the magazine very close to the camera, so I could get a better look at what's happening. Only about five minutes in, I could tell it was doing the exact same thing.
I'm stumped. What's going wrong here?

The normals on the magazine are screwed.

Check Normals dude!

I thought it was a normals problem too, but I checked earlier, and everything was fine, normals wise.
Now that it's further on in the test render, I can see that the black parts aren't completely black, though. It looks like those areas are just very darkly shaded for some reason.

Mind sharing a .blend of the magazine alone (with material definition)?
