An Island

Hello all.

I'm currently trying to make a scene with "an island floating in the air"
Here you can see a drawing (a sketch) of this idea :

I have quickly made the island and the earth (just to test how to configure the igs file) :

The island is about 100-150 meters above the sea level.

Now I have a few question....

1°)
In this render, I have only put a "skyligth" with "extra atmospheric=false".
So there is a blue sky due to "extra atmospheric=false"
(and it's fast to render)
If I want to make it more "realistic", I suppose i must use an "atmospheric sphere"... I don't know how to configure this :(
What about rendering time ?

2°)
I really want to make nice clouds. I found a topic where Ono shows us very very nice clouds.... But it is not currenttly in the realease.
Any other solution ? If I must create them in 3DS, it will be a bit "difficult" :(

Thx and very sorry for my very bad english.

Great start so far. With lots of work this could become a fantastic landscape/matte painting kind of image.
If I were you, I'd do the clouds in Terragen2 and composite them. Or you can find great full hemispherical skies on CGtextures.com.
I'm not too hot on atmospheric scattering straight into Indigo. It looks great but it really pushes up render times. Unless you're going to be using the Ranch, I'd suggest doing this in post prod too. For this, you can use a ZBuffer output as a compositing layer mask in Photoshop to get the lower contrast, lighter tones for distant parts of your landscape. Some modeling apps also allow you to render volumetric sun rays. With this and a clay render you can also create another layer mask.
All this is stuff I've done in my landscapes and they work great.
Also have a look at the work of Rudolf Herzog (Rochr) on CGTalk. He's very good at using unbiased renderers to generate elements for final matte painting compositing. He's pretty much the gold standard in the area.

I must admit that I do not unterstand all you said but I will try this and I will visit CGTalk :)

Thx. 8)

Unfortunaly, I don't have a lot of time to spent on this. So i won't progress very quickly. You have to be patient and you will have to "wait" a little :o) LOL
