ok long time since I posted an image

I need some opinions please on the lighting set up for this studio type experiment
I am not very confident about placing lights
this is just 2 large meshlight planes angled down and in
what would you do to help this?
how do I pick up highlights and use fill best?
I know lighting is a large topic - perhaps you know of a good source of information out there

Hey Big Fan...

For some nice Studio Light Setups as HDRI, check out www.digitalin.fr
Maybe one of them is a good starting point...

Nice model, I'm interested where this ends :)

A nice big light at behind camera left would look great, and show off those curves (from the shiny paint) well.

This model would also look good in a high-key environment.

Waaaay to unrealistic for me. Shouldn't it fall to the side? :D

Just kidding, I think it looks good :) You could make the floor like this:
______/ <-- 45°
And make the transition soft, so you don't see the step. Other than that, maybe look at some professional car photos, or at http://www.cg-cars.com/forum/gallery/br ... es.php?c=5 to get some inspiration.

thanks guys :D

I picked one of the hdr to try... - converted to exr in blender naturally -

the floor/backdrop is actually like that but the model is sitting on a turntable/platform so it looks a bit odd

the results so far are mixed :? -

firstly I tried zsouthboy's suggestion of a 3rd emitter to the left and rear of the camera and it did illuminate some more detail and provide highlights but it also made some difficult reflections and shadow on the mudguard and the side reflector which has a chrome backing strip lit up like a real catseye  .. a bit distracting I thought...

secondly I tried an exr in addition to just the 2 top lights and this provides a much more even illumination of the underside - possibly too much and I should have used lesser gain. somehow this lighting makes it appear a bit more toyish perhaps the blue paint is too shiny and it didnt show so much in the gloom before..the exhaust is improved though :)

anyway will keep trying

(photos reverse order here) :P

Rendered on my quad core.

Time elapsed: 13 h, 18 m, 20 s
Done 6693700000.00000 samples (3674.62670 samples per pixel)
139740.48241 samples / second (7.15612 micro-seconds / sample)

I'll upload this to the gallery once I get the name of the modeller again.

well now that its rendered properly - thanks very much ono :D - I can see a few issues :? ~ things floating in space ~ but ah its ok...very clean...I would need to wait about 5-6 days to get that from my pc

I think the blur/softness is from the MN cubic filters @suzakas. I know you have noticed this effect before. I am not sure what ring and blur settings would help with that...

with a little more detail and attention to lighting and materials you certainly could do a very credible photo-real render with indigo for product development purposes.

I also think, the filter settings made it too blurry...
And the reflections look quite boring.

Else, it's great :)

"quite boring" :?

you are spoiled by too much sexy girls in the 'finished works' forum kram..

next I post reflective spheres and white cubes to assist with your rehabilitation 8)
