any suggestions on this are welcome. i actually modeled and instanced about 15,000 pollen spores but they are too small. I think imma have to redo them. does anyone know of a good SSS setting for the green stems? right now they are just specular, but they should be sort of a cream i think?

nice
but a little bit too diffuse. try to add some phong reflections

I'm guessing that you mean specular on the flower petals? I think it could do with a bit more, the bump map doesn't show at all as it is.
i'm trying now to redo the stamen, but i am having a tough time with it. I think that i'm taking the wrong approach all together with modeling.. here is what i have so far. The top is part of the reference photo i'm using, the bottom is my sad attempt at making a cg version. The material on the pollen spores is sss.
As for modeling, i think im gonna try using displacement and a texture map..
but that still doesn't help me with the material. as you can see in the photo light should glow through round the edges of the pollen and i can't figure out how to do that. I've tried transparent diffuse, SSS, and various blended materials. My guess is that i can use SSS for this but i suck at figuring out the correct settings. any suggestions?

The problem is that those pollen are quite porous. Hard to simulate in Indigo... they're more or less filled with tiny bubbles, which might have a great impact on the scattering...
And your colour currently also doesn't match. I guess, a lot more blue and a bit more green absorption doesn't harm

they're quite orange

the color is pretty bad

i noticed that when i was putting together the preview.. Yeah it almost looks like pach fuzz around the pollen in the photo, im really wishing indigo had a minnaert shader.
second try

so i gave up on trying to do the stamina the right way, and i just used the gimp to soften them up.

actually looks kinda realistic

Sweet...
The land on the right would be nice and more realistic with other flowers or trees, no?

It looks good, even though it might not be "right".

Yes. I'm convinced by it. You nailed this one I think.

Is that a diffuse transmitter for the petals?
thanks for all the replies

thanks alot for all the replies
Vanessa07 - your right i think, trees would be great over there.. i might drop a photo background in, no sense in modeling a high detail forest if its just gonna get blurred all to heck and back
matt - yes and no. its a blend material, half diffuse transmitter, half specular
