Next Generation Maya Exporter

Post by dougal2 » Tue Jun 16, 2009 10:08 pm

Hello All,

I've been lurking around here a fair amount since Indigo's commercialisation and I am still noticing a lack of activity from Maya users.

I am wondering if the prospect of the availability of a much re-vamped Maya exporter would help to attract more Maya users to Indigo - or whether Glare or anyone else has a perception that the attraction of new users should come before the time investment of re-working the MtI exporter.

(ie. a chicken and egg situation - which comes first?)

I for one think that getting the exporter development underway would help to create some "noise" that will attract new (and possibly old) users, and inspire development of new features in the exporter.

@Glare: please feel free to email me direct with your ideas, I've not heard anything from you guys in many weeks now, despite both direct and subtle efforts.

@Existing or potential Maya exporter users: Your ideas about exporter features and workflow are most welcome.

Regards,
Doug.

Hey dougal!

I have recently begun a course in 3D animation working only in maya for pretty much everything. Taken very quickly to modelling in Maya and loving it, my only issue is that everything i model needs to be exported to blender via obj, mapped and textured there. It's HIGHLY annoying, i would not only LOVE a new updated maya plugin (i find the old one unfathomable, havent even managed to install it) but i would be willing to help out in whatever way possible, although my help is probably not very valuable as i dont code ... :P but i spose its the thought that counts.

Would absolutely be interested, excited and keen to help.

Please dougal! please :P

Kind regards
mat

An "Indigo shelf" is added after you installed MtI 1.0.9. There is a button to start MtI. Point 4 is missing in the documentation page about that. If the problem is different you can expose it in the Maya forum, matsta.

By the way Matsta, Stromberg and others: any question regarding Maya, just ask ! I should be of a good help for modeling, texturing and such, have no hesitations !

Funnily, I wondered the same on the egg/chicken situation these last weeks...

As you know I have been tinkering with MtI, eventually ehancing the tool but essentially exploring and learning more; I started to add new functionalities only recently.

I stopped updating publically because I realised that many conditions were lacking for a raise, amongst wich: tools (and developer) maturation, ergonomy and of course documentation, wich is the real link between an application and its users - apart pure passion ;) -

I can consider releasing this current dev version, but it should be thought as a secondary branch I believe, not all of the recent additions are optimized, and can't even be declared stable before they are tested further.

BTW this forum is not the one you want to use in general to reach users, Doug, I've been biting them around more that once hehe...

Sure, it was mostly a post relating to developers - addressing the users was an afterthought.
