Violet: IGI vs PNG Tone-Map Bug

Post by scorpius » Fri Jul 18, 2008 9:35 am

I know violet will be obsolete because of the upcoming integrated tone-mapper in the next release, but I think I found a bug.

Has anyone noticed that if you open an igi and set the tone-mapping scale factors to the same values in your igs scene file, it doesn't produce the same results as the png ouput? In fact, it's way off. The best match I could find is if you reduce the values by half -- and it's still not exactly the same.

Anyone know the reason?

I think the parameters in Violet were adjusted to behave more like camera exposure controls in "stops".

Also, it's not impossible that the tonemapping has been tweaked in indigo itself, but on ly Ono would know that.

Basically, Indigo and Violet started with the same algorithms and settings, but it's been a long time since they were actually the same, and several different developers have tinkered with Violet over the years.
