an "bgimage" or a blend or something like that would be ok, but that uniform colour somewhat kills the goodness of it...
violet / indigo are very strong colours, you will see those colours quite seldom filling a big space ;)
they have to be used carefully.

Yes, just make it the standard poor uncolorized and deadly rotten momified color of any application.

Looks promising.

I didn't say, it should be uncoloured, but it shouldn't be flat-violet/electric indigo...
Either make blends or what ever, but not pure flat indigo.

Talking over aesthetic i think background should be 50% gray.
If you deal with color, your perception may be altered because a wide area of a saturated color...

You are totally right. All this overuse of colour is really annoying. Also it looks crappy if you use several applications at once which happen to have different background colours. All windows should be shades of light grey on the main areas.
Only when using full-screen-apps you can deviate from this. But when dealing with colours you should really stick to grey as Ricky mentioned!

Yes, I agree and especially in such an application!
Because you can't assess your materials accurately against a background with such a color contrast.

Yes, i like it. But white is wrong too. It's too bright. Let it grey!

Only 50% grey doesn't have ANY influence to other colours.
darker or brighter shades of grey will let the pic appear darker or brighter, but élse, I quite like it :D
