Talking over aesthetic i think background should be 50% gray.
If you deal with color, your perception may be altered because a wide area of a saturated color...

You are totally right. All this overuse of colour is really annoying. Also it looks crappy if you use several applications at once which happen to have different background colours. Only when using full-screen-apps you can deviate from this. But when dealing with colours you should really stick to grey as Ricky mentioned!
