Material lab

Post by dakiru » Mon Sep 28, 2009 6:27 am

Hi guys. I've prepared few materials lately. And before uploading to matDB I would like to ask you for suggestions on making them better :) Comments a critics are very welcome

Problem: When I pack the material in Indigo and then want to use it here what I get:

Code: Select all

Error: There was an error with the scene file: failed to load XML doc from path 'E:\_res\materials\redwood.pigm': Error document empty. (Line 0, column 0.)
Solved by unpacking the .pigm and using the .igm instead. Is it the only way?

Yeah I'm not sure you can use the .pigms straight away yet as they are basically a compressed "folder", but I think Ono mentionned he might make that possible later on (by probably making indigo unpack the material internally or something).

Do you think it's ok, that I used phong with exponent map for the asphalt? And not a blend of phong and oren-nayar?

I think the result is quite satisfying as it is, I guess you could always try the other alternative and compare? Or just submit both and bump your way to #1 matDB contributor ;)

Phong/Oren-Nayar blended with blend map. Is it better?

Could you somehow render both side by side? In one scene, because the first render seems a little washed out compared to this one so it's hard to tell which one is "better"

Personally I like the material version on the right better than the one on the left, although both of them are very nice :)

So, the right one then, seem to be more realistic for me too :)

During the mat upload I've got this message:

Code: Select all

We're sorry, but something went wrong.

We've been notified about this issue and we'll take a look at it shortly.
