maxCosTheta, correct. The returned values should be within the 0;1 range.

pow(x, 8 ) raises x to the power of 8. It's documented into the technical reference ! As Ono told, in the special case that you want to raise a number to the power of 2 it is more efficient to note x*x as "pow() is quite slow".
