Making Realistic Carpet
I'm using Sketchup, and I know it can't handle high geometries, like using the fur tool. I have tried the subdivision options, quite not real in render. In making an interior, fur carpets make it complete.
Any ways to do this tricky problem? Or any?

Re: Making Realistic Carpet
bump and displacement carpets generally suck
its simply due to the single direction normals or mesh gets extruded.
Vector displacement could change that, but isn't implemented, and also getting maps for it is more tricky then doing pure 2D textures...
Best carpets are done by a hair engine and transformed to a (highrez) mesh and are usable in Indigo quite well.
Another option is to scatter a basemesh over a carpet to get a nice effect, but that ends up to uniform most of the time, look here for an example: http://bertrand-benoit.com/blog/2011/02 ... rest-pack/
my "best" displacement carpet can be seen here (3rd image).
Worked on it for ages, tested a lot, and ended up unsatisfied with the result...
Here a example of a Hair based carpet done by dcm.
If you can't do a hair carpet by yourself, simple invest a few $$$ and buy one, its worth it!

Re: Making Realistic Carpet
thanks Zom-B,
I will try to figure out, do some experiments
on your "best" displacement carpet, I saw it was also alike from the tutorial, but the interior is great & neat.
I also love your website. Are they all Indigo renders?!

Thanks for the kind words, everything that looks somehow nice is done in Indigoninopiamonte wrote:I also love your website. Are they all Indigo renders?!

Re: Making Realistic Carpet
MakeFur in combination with instancing (see proxy instancing) can do the trick I think.
I don't know the Fur plugin and its options very well but as a first try I reached the attached...
May be with more option tweaking (force, stiffness, ...) you can get what you want?! I also attached the testfile for SketchUp.

Re: Making Realistic Carpet
Great input Cotty, many thanks.
Nino, could you please edit the first post in order to change the title in a way wich specifies this is for SketchUp ? That would be a fair pointer, thank you.

Re: Making Realistic Carpet
Great technique Cotty. It deserves a tutorial. I have a hope to add support for the fur plugin in a future release. It should be possible to assign 'fur' properties to a face and then the carpet fibres would automatically scattered during the export process.cotty wrote:MakeFur in combination with instancing (see proxy instancing) can do the trick I think.

@cotty
Thanks for that very nice tutorial and the attachment. That would make sense now on how will I use the fur plugin
@CTZn
What do you mean change, or how will I do it?

Re: Making Realistic Carpet
I played a little more with the MakeFur plugin and noticed that only some of the many options have an influence on the result if you use your own component:
- Density and MaxNumber
- TopJitter
- Direction (X, Y, Z)
Edit: here are some examples:

Re: Making Realistic Carpet
This time, I used the attachment of cotty but I created a patch for an easy scattering. I'll update the more real render later
Re: Making Realistic Carpet
Thank you cotty for your inspiration for using the awesome MakeFur plugin. Any SketchUp user would be wise to put in the time to learn the power of using the plugin in combination with dummy instancing.
I was finally able to come up with a 3D grass system that gives good results. Using the fur plugin (actually, the Make Crowd tool), I can easily scatter my 'dummy grass' components across sloping terrain. At the borders, I just use more densely scattered instances of smaller grass clumps. I used two variations of the grass components (one lighter, one darker) so I could add color variation. No more photoshop grass. Yay!

Nice result and great tip with the denser settings for the borders!
