Translations

Post by benn » Thu Feb 05, 2009 10:06 am

Hey everyone,

As part of the new betas, we want to get indigo translated into other languages. What languages would people be able to translate the english version into?

I'll set up a web-based translator, so you can log in and translate indigo and plugins into your language.

So...

Guten Tag?
Bonjourno?
Konichiwa?
Ola!?

Ben

As long as its only the executable file you need help with I'm in with German... but I hope you don't plan translating the ultra technical Manual!?

cancel -> zuruck

yes -> yes

no -> nein

ok -> Ok

Help -> Hilfe
About... -> Über...
Layers -> Ebenen
Apperture Diffraction -> Blendenbeugung
Enable -> aktivieren
Whitepoint -> Weißpunkt
Preset -> Voreinstellung

Post-scale -> "Gamma" (Nachskala)

Something like that?

Burn is Überbelichtung.
Tonemapping could also be Tonwertkorrektur.

@alex22: That's great - far better :)
just that "Tonwertkorrektur" usually is an LDR->LDR process, rather than an HDR -> LDR one like "Tonemapping"...

I'd translate it like this:

Code: Select all

Resume paused render -> Render fortsetzen
Tonemapping -> Tonwertabbildung

fortsetzen is better indeed. But there is a second resume function:
This one is for paused renders but in the Menu "File", you also have "Resume render from IGI", so...

Code: Select all

angehaltenen (OR) pausierten Render fortsetzen
and
Render mit IGI fortsetzen

Actually I'm also no Fan of localizations... Support and Forum are english and with the knowledge of localized therms you just have problems to understand and communicate.

Being so technical like a unbiased Render engine,the users ae for 98% fine with English... and at least my english evolves by reading and communicating in the Queens language ;-)

Funnily, due to the English-ness of Indigo, I actually knew some technical terms in English before I found out what they're called in German xD
Around Indigo, I now also can talk better in English than in German....
Basically, I also don't need a translated version. Maybe, it would catch some additional users..., but on cost of support, as many users wont want to ask in the forums in English, if they could ask in their mother tongue. Especially due to confusion.
For example, if "Pre-Scale" indeed gets named "Helligkeit" in German (which actaully means "brightness", ppl wont even know, what it means when ppl talk of that in different languages...

Or look at "Tone Mapping" - that's a word, you can't *really* translate. Even the German Wiki-article is called "Tone Mapping".
They suggest "Dynamikkompression" as possible translation (or rather a synonyme) but if you use that, noone would know what you mean.
Clicking on the links to different languages of that article tells me, same is true for Danish, Bokmål (Norwegian) and Polish... Under circumstances, also for Chinese, but I can't read "色调映射"

Maybe, a partial translation is usefull File->Datei , but technical terms might stay English Pre/Post-Scale, Burn,... , just to keep different tongue communities "compatible", so to say....

tongue = leaks ;)

What, exactly will be concerned by translation ? Or,

Have wiki editors to worry about ?

Is the technical pdf concerned ?

Mostly I share hstockolm and Zom-B opinions about softwares, but translating documentation is a project wiki editors are concerned with (because there were wiki editors before recently ;)), this is essential.

Then after if the terminology is changing between applications that's Babel. English is the international technical exchange language, I'd stick with that.

As far as I'm concerned, MtI is talking Indigo's language, and Maya is available in english or in japanese, period.
