A quick little competition to the end of January. Your goal is to do a clay render of an object about 5cm x 5cm that it suitable for printing on a 3d printer.

There will be only one winner for this prize, and they will recieve an Indigo Competition Winner badge. Plus, they may also win a 'secret surprise'.

Entries will be judged on their modelling, and studio scene setup.

What criteria makes a model 3D-printable?
Obviously no holes and normals pointing outside, but what else?
I suppose details < 1mm are not printable? Or what is the minimum size of details to be printed correctly?
Anything else to take care of?

Other than that I really like the idea of having a modeling-competition!

I've made some few model for printing, details are 0.1mm.
Then, it depends of the material used, there are differents qualites... for cylender, don't use <2mm

Maybe a small doc with different materials (density, rigidity...) would be nice.

Maybe a Material should be posted for everybody to use here!
Maybe something Zbrush style

You mean this object mesuring 5x5x5 Cm approximatively is meant to be able to be made?
Does it have some modelling restrictions? not too smooth, not too square etc...
I hope i ll be able to do something interesting!

If there is a secret prize of getting something 3d printed, I could not mention that. That'd be secret. And you'd spoil the freaking surprise.

but i have never seen a 3D printed stuff so even in modelling i don t know if what i am modelling is suitable for 3D printer (oh i feel so ashamed )

Can be whatever you want as long as it's watertight! And depending on the material, detail shouldn't be less than like 0.5mm or so... Other than that, in my experience, anything goes!

Bottom right on the "more details" pages they tell you the minimum detail size

oH by the way, "clay render" means that the object has to be in the "clay" preset material for example? or that the whole scene has to be in only one mat? or for example i could have the object trying to simulate one of the plastics from the link above, and it could be on some wooden table or etc...?
